MPI104 overview... assessment 2

In MPI_104 this semester I have learnt a lot about the internet that I previously was not aware of.

In first term we created a blogger account and I learnt how to post links as well as messages. I also learnt how to change the aesthetic look of my blog by changing the colours and fonts as well as adding images and slideshows of photos.
I was also able to comment on other peoples blogs in my class.

In Delicious we learnt how to save bookmarks to specific website which can be accessed fom any computer, rather than having to save favourite sites on each individual computer that is used.

We also learnt how to share photo's on Flickr and join groups and add friends on the site.

In second term we have learnt about counters and RSS.
I learnt that a counter is a device hich stores the number of times a particular event has occurred, often in a relationship to a clock signal.
I learnt that RSS is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. It is used to solve a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter.

We also learnt about Google Reader which works by reading atom and RSS feeds online or offline, so it can update your subscriptions even when your not online.

Finally we learnt about a search engine for searching blogs called technorati. Technorati competes with search engines such as Google and Yahoo, and unlike these other search engines Technorati also provides popularity indexes giving each member a ranking and authority.

In mpi 104 this semester we also learnt how to create our own website using a program called iweb which allows you to change settings to chosen layouts and add links and pictures and extra pages to your site.

week 10 - counters and RSS

COUNTERS

- what are counters?
in digital logic and computing, a counter is a device which stores (and sometimes displays) the number of times a particular event or process has occurred, often in a relationship to a clock signal.

- why would you use them?
counters may be used to store (and sometimes display) the number of times a particular event or process has occurred, such as how many times your particular website or page has been viewed.

- what are some other web analysis tools?
google analytics, clicktracks, webtrends, websidestory HBX analytics, Omnitures SiteCatalyst.

RSS

- What is RSS?
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

- What is it used for?
RSS is used to solve a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter.

- How does Google reader work?
Google reader works by reading Atom and RSS feeds online or offline, so it can update your subscriptions even when your not online.

MPI_104 overview... Assessment 1

In MPI_104 so far this semester I have learnt a lot of new things about the internet that I previously was not aware of.

In creating my blogger account I learnt how to post links as well as messages. I created 8 posts over the term with some based on uni work and some on my personal interests. I think the more interesting posts would be those with the links to cool sites and the ones sharing my photos such as this one, and this one.
I learnt how to change the aesthetic look of my blog by changing the colours and fonts as well as adding images and slideshows of photos.
I was also able to comment on other peoples blogs in my class such as this and also this.
My posts were kept in order with Tags labelling them either MPI_104 related or otherwise, and explaining the nature of the post, whether it be sharing sites or photos or links to work done in class.

In Delicious I have saved 17 bookmarks, some being to the blogs of other class members and others being to sites of my personal interest. I have included mainly photography and art sites, as well as music because these are my favourite hobbies and are things I enjoy to participate in. My favourite three would be Deviant Art, Photo of the day and Photography.com.

On the site Flickr I have uploaded 30 images with these being three of my favourites: sunset at farm, flouro day, and wrecked car

Templates

ADVANTAGES OF USING CSS:
One advantage of using CSS is that it allows most of the information; such as: font colours, background styles, element alignments, borders and sizes, to be moved to a seperate style sheet resulting in considerably simpler HTML markup.
CSS can also define color, font, text alignment, size, borders, spacing, layout and many other typographic characteristics independently for on-screen and printed views. It also defines non-visual styles such as the speed and emphasis with which text is read out by aural text readers.

What can be changed using templates?
font colours, background styles, element alignments, borders and sizes can all be changed using templates.

What cannot be changed using the template options?
The actual content of the blog posts cannot be changed using the template options.

Why is accessibiliity worth considering in webpage design?
accessibility is worth considering in webpage design to get an idea whether your webpage can be accessed by the specific audience to which it is aimed. When designing your webpage you need to make sure it can be viewed and understood by your audience.

In my blog i used the template options to change the font and colour of my text and headings as well as the font and colour of the links. I also altered the colour of the borders.

Del.icio.us

Today i made a delicious page where i can save and share bookmarks online.  Delicious is useful as it uses tags so users can find items of interest to them and because these bookmarks are stored online they can be accessed from any computer, not just the computer it was saved on.

Here is a link to my delicious page.
